VS #1: BDP – You Must Learn VS Ras Kass – Nature of the Threat

BDP vs Ras Kass

I was in Elementary school when BDP released You Must Learn. I had no idea at the time how much of a Pandora’s box this song would open for me at only 12 years old. KRS One dropped jewels on me that would forever alter my thinking and help feed the already growing curiosity I had about the information I knew and what I was learning at the time. Fast forward seven years and I’m fresh out of high school, and I picked up Ras Kass’ album on the strength of every Hip Hop magazine lauding him as the second coming. I enjoyed every track on the album but Nature of the Threat was the one that literally took me back to school. An audio history lesson, taken from unspoken  events and every clandestine book written, Ras Kass had me thinking that I knew nothing at all.
Edutainment is in full effect on each of these tracks, but who did it better: Boogie Down Productions who dropped a party on your history class with the crazy kazoo and horn sample from Get Up and Dance or was it Ras Kass whose unconventional, ominous and bare Nature of the Threat made you listen to every word he said while he dropped seven minutes of science?
