Nicholas Ryan Gant – New Day feat. Amma Whatt [Stream]

Nicholas Ryan Gant continues to make himself a noted contender in my book.

Between his FreEP’s, Hittin’ Switches in 2009 and last years Angst in A’cappella, plus various features like the one he turned in for Zo! on his last free release and most recently for our On Deck album, the Ghetto Falsetto is becoming an adept at making music that not only cuts edges but also hones a few of the duller ones in my playlist.

This past May he dropped his latest long player “Promises” to a mixed bag of reception. At 14 tracks long, it’s decidedly more ambitious than his past efforts and though it’s refreshing that Gant approaches each with his effortless head register, some of the muddled and spastic production on a scant few of the album’s tracks are a decided detriment to Gant’s vocals.

The last part of that sentence fortunately doesn’t hold true in regard to this heater featuring newcomer Amma Whatt on not just vocals but co-writing creds as well.

Over producer Steveo’s brand of mid-tempo cadence emphasized with electronic claps and moog-ish whistles, Nicholas’ lilting tenor urges his new love to disconnect herself from the past hurts of a relationship gone awry, hit reset on her mental mind and then press play so they can move forward with what they are trying to build together. In response, Amma’s exquisite alto explains that even though she’s hesitant to relinquish her heart, she’s willing to at least try, just fall back a little and give her some time.

Which in regards to matters of the heart, is more than anyone can expect these days.
