Late Pass #71: Will.I.Am – Nahh Mean feat Phife
Posted on October 17, 2011 | No CommentsWill I Am was the only producer to get 2 entries on BBE's Beat Generation series. Each release had one standout track that completely shut down the rest of the album. Lost Change had Lay Me Down with Terry Dexter that still bangs to this day and Must Be 21 can boast the infectious Nah Mean featuring the flawless member of ATCQ, Phife. The track, with it's jazzy, almost bossa feel really sounds like it could've enjoyed space on the Sergio Mendes remix project, Timeless Will did later. Enjoy...and don't forget your late pass -
Late Pass #70: DJ Jazzy Jeff – Things Fall A Preview (Mix)
Posted on October 3, 2011 | No CommentsI can vividly recall our introduction, seeing Proceed on Rap City with The Roots rhyming on a Philadelphia rooftop. Their sound was equal parts ATCQ and Rakim, soulful Hip Hop with the proverbial lyrics to go. They were the first Little Brother, the first group to take the lessons of the forerunners of jazzy, sample based Hip Hop and effectively imitate it, all while advancing the aesthetic. -

Late Pass #68: Bugz in the Attic – Booty La La
Posted on September 23, 2011 | No CommentsI've always been a huge fan of Bugz in the Attic's work, but this one right here used to be my ultimate jam. Released in '05, featuring M'pho on vocals with Bembe Segue backing her up, if this once can't make you dance... It's splotchy, wonky, even broken electro soul, but Booty La La hits you in a really primal area that causes you to release yourself through dance and feels FANTASTIC on a Friday! If you want to approach the day slow and easy, then check out Ishfaq's remix of the track HERE -

Vinyl? Check! #52: Sugar Star
Posted on July 4, 2011 | No CommentsTV One's Unsung doc on the Ohio Players airs tonight and I'm supergeeked about this. I've read some interviews post-breakup of the Players' but it will be interesting to see/hear from their mouths what caused the end of a truly influential group. The aftermath of the group's demise launched a few solo album releases, but none of which were highly commercially successful. In 1985, lead singer SugarFoot linked up with the Roger Troutman to produce his Sugar Kiss album. This led to Larry and Zapp playing on the album, and a disappointing remix of the Players' classic Fire. -
Late Pass #64: Roy Davis Jr – Gabrielle feat Peven Everett
Posted on June 18, 2011 | 1 CommentHere's a classic that I used to love spinning back in the day, the 2 step/Garage classic, Gabrielle! It still sounds good to this day; the production plus the beautiful vocals from one of the hardest working jazz/soul/house vocalist-producers, Peven Everett. Although a classic, multi-instrumentalist Tanya Auclair saw fit to remake it in a downtempo style. Check it out HERE -
