The Fake Flamingo Records Experiment

While causally strolling across the artists listed in the ambient section of Bandcamp, I came across an interesting project from Fake Flamingo Records. Since this past January, they’ve basically taken all of the name association out of the music game to ensure each producer featured gets a fair shake on getting unbiased ears listening but I’ll let them explain the details more below.

Fake Flamingo Recordings was conceived in 2011 as a response to the current phenomena of selling an artist’s identity rather than their music.  A group of veteran label owners, artists, and writers created a framework for the project, culminating in a 2012 launch.  The goal is to release a digital single each week, created by an artist working under a pseudonym.  As an added bonus, when the Bandcamp proceeds reach $1K, a limited edition 12″ vinyl record will be pressed and 100 people who actually paid for their downloads will receive the record for free.

The ability for an artist to create new sounds without having to reference their past work has proved to be quite freeing.  The music is the product, not the person.  We hope that you enjoy the art as much as we have enjoyed putting it together.

The great thing about this concept is that it truly takes the “Brand Name” factor out of the equation, so what the listener gets is music unadulterated by any preconceived notions of what you expect the producer to sound like based on previous releases.

I’ve listened to several like the ones above and have yet to be able to make any connection to something I’ve heard before and emphatically know exactly who produced it. Plus the pseudonyms that are being used, as wacky as some of them are, aren’t giving any hints either. Refreshing.
