Phantom Limb – The Pines [Video]

And now for something completely different.

I came across a Soundcloud playlist last month, compiled by Britain based Cannonball PR. A few known and unknown artists were featured on it from Ellie Lawson to Goodluck Johnathan to Bobbie Gordon but one track immediately grabbed my attention and didn’t let go.

Their effortless blend of classic southern soul and country blues is quite intriguing as the band exhibit a unique ability to combine the two, much in the same way Ray Charles did during his career.

Of course, the truly astounding part of this cut is front-woman Yolonda Quartey and the mighty instrument she was blessed with. Citing Aretha Franklin and even Dolly Parton as musical influences, it’s evident within her earnest and passionate delivery in a song that speaks to the freedom we all long for at some point in time.
