Not all Mixtapes are created equal and these days, for one to be considered a success, the artist has to be able to keep the audience just as captive with random tracks as they would like to hopefully do with a full length album. Healthy doses of wit and personality have been known to go far in this respect as well.
None of which should pose as too much for Jean Grae to handle. In anticipation of her new full length dropping sometime this fall on Blacksmith Records, she’s linked up DJ Drama to dunk an eleven track deep Lorna Doone in the proverbial glass of milk stained with plasma.
Jean puts in some serious work here, ferociously attacking six of the eleven tracks dolo, only enlisting help from Talib Kweli, Styles P, Royce 5’9 and Pharoahe Monch in the form of four cuts that have already been featured elsewhere. Just listening to “Casebasket“, should show that JeanGreasy continues to be a problem for anyone trading flows with her over decent production.
And much like her raucous twitstream, Jean’s pretty adept at saying whatever the kcuf she wants, however she wants to say it. Her being ill on the mic at the same time? Well, that’s almost as good as the icing on a Butterscotch Krimpet. Almost.
