Georgia Anne Muldrow as Jyoti – Ocotea

Ocotea is the first release under singer/songwriter/producer Georgia Anne Muldrow’s new alias Jyoti. The project marks Georgia’s first instrumental jazz release. The album will be released Worldwide on June 15th, 2010 as both a physical CD and digital release. A limited vinyl edition will be released August 3rd, 2010.

Drawing from an ocean of influences such as Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys, Swamini Truiyasangitanada’s Monastic Trio, Charlie Mingus, Eric Dolphy, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Henry Threadgill, Sun Ra, and Stevie Wonder( to name a few), Ocotea is a new frontier for Georgia Anne Muldrow’s sonic discoveries. She is appearing as Jyoti (meaning light or flame in Sanskrit) in all of her “jazz” recordings to come, paying homage to the great and masterful ancestor Alice Coltrane who gifted her with this name shortly before she ascended into an even higher consciousness. Infused with experimental synthesizers that posses a pan-tonal sensibility, and melodies that soar about with raw musicianship – Ocotea is not one to miss!

Jyoti says, “Ocotea is a special tree whose wood dispels frantic or stagnant energies when ignited. It’s presence and fragrance inspired this entire album so I thought it would only be right to give this piece it’s name-sake. During this recording I thought of firs and its purifying virtues…It’s willful path. What it consumes and what it leaves behind. I began to imagine this process within the context of my people and the genesis of our physical liberation. All praises due to the ancestors
