Tyler, The Creator – Find Your Wings feat Roy Ayers

I gladly accept my Late Pass on Tyler, The Creator. I’ve never been sold on him, dismissed him as a shock artist and only listened to Cherry Bomb because I had absolutely nothing else to do…or nothing that warranted my full attention. Once I pressed play, I found myself, more than once, rewinding songs thinking, “That’s odd, but good.” By the time I reached track 5, Cherry Bomb had my full attention. Are those vibraphones? Find Your Wings, which features an uncredited appearance from Roy Ayers, is one of the few tracks with a message and leaves you wishing Sylvia Striplin was available for this session. The musical foundation of Cherry Bomb is all over the place, dynamic and actually quite comparable to To Pimp A Butterfly in regards to it’s makeup. If TIPAB is the sound of Compton, this is the sound of Ladera Heights and I like it. Time to go gobble up Tyler’s previous creations.
