Saturday Sample Sessions 009: Myrna Summers – Give Me Something To Hold On To [Part 2]

Grammy Nominated, Toutorsky Academy of Music trained and Mahalia Jackson award recipient Myrna Summers was one of  Gospel music’s rising stars in the 1970’s.

With a distinct blend of Gospel and Soul, Summers injected her passionate singing and her composing talent into numerous solo and ensemble recordings over her career before becoming Minister of Music at Reid Temple in Glenn Dale, MD but possibly none so much as within the reprise of a song she and a troupe of other singers performed during an outreach ministry concert at the Federal Women’s Correctional Facility in Alderson, WV.

What instantly grabs you here and doesn’t let go are those opening piano chords..well…that is until Myrna comes over them with her commanding Alto and the choir turns it up another notch. No wonder that when producing wunderkind Nottz got a hold to the record, it was a no-brainer to create something of greatness from it, which in turn became two great songs from two of the most enigmatic artists around.

Bilal –Something To Hold On To

Slated as the opener for Bilal’s “Love For Sale” LP, his exceptional 2006 sophomore effort was leaked early to the interwebs. This caused Interscope Records to place it on the “Shelf of Album Purgatory“, citing it as unmarketable, as labels had yet to understand how to use the phenomenon of the Internet’s “Everything for Free” propensity to its advantage.

Also of note would be another track that was spawned from the NottzRaw arrangement.

Jay Electronica –Something To Hold On To

Using the same backdrop as Bilal, Jay Elect goes on what’s arguably one of his better tangents to date. Here’s to hoping that once the #urbanlegend that “Patents of Nobility” has started to become actually drops, it will be on this level or greater.
