Happy New Year all..I’m glad to share the new piece, Reel Beats, a new series of incredible soundtracks – classics and newly discovered.
This dvd caught my eye at the Downtown Central library a couple of weeks ago and I couldn’t put it down after noticing the cover. Went home, popped it in and as soon as the intro music started I was like “WHOA!” I’m talking about beats, instrumentation, effects..crazy! After about 15 minutes in, it got to a point where we stopped the film just to google the music/soundtrack and to see who, if anyone, sampled this album and then..guess who pops up first? Yes. the Ubiquitous J Dilla (see video below). Little did I know (or could remember) that Dilla (*Dammit I Know That Sample), Madlib (Quasimodo-Come on Feet), Big Pun (Boomerang) and a few others have all smashed this one up already, so for that reason alone this album was worth my checking out. I ordered the vinyl from Dusty Groove the next day..The Fantastic Suite coming soon (I’ll speak on this later)..
Categorized as psychedelic jazz, composed by Alain Goraguer and the winner of the 1973 jury prize at the Cannes Festival in 1973, this French film, written and directed by Rene Laloux, is based on the novel Oms en Série by French writer Stefan Wul. It takes place on a future distant planet where humans (Oms) have been brought to the giant blue Draags’ home planet as pets while other Oms run wild..I’ll stop here because you have to see how this plays out for yourself – haha!..
If you are straight up movie heads like us over here, you’ll dig the film as well. Its a bit on the avant garde tip (well, its totally bugged out I should say), but I believe if it weren’t so bugged out it wouldn’t have been such a cool flick. Amidst the surrealist graphics and spaced out sounds lies a solid story of humanity unlike we’ve ever seen before, making us think twice about life no matter how big or small.
