Dilla Day 2011 (BHM)

Thursday February 10, 2011 The J Dilla Foundation and BamaLoveSoul in association with WeAreArtists, LOBOTOMIX, Jodine’s Corner and The Fifth Sense present Dilla Day 2011.

Dilla Day is an annual event that takes place to honor the life of acclaimed Grammy award winning producer James “J Dilla” Yancey; who has produced music for artists ranging from Janet Jackson to A Tribe Called Quest. J Dilla passed away in 2006 after long suffering with Lupus and the rare blood disease TTP. After his passing, J Dilla’s mother, Maureen Yancey started The J Dilla Foundation (jdillafoundation.org) to help fund inner-city music programs, and provide scholarships to students attending schools that have progressive music curricula. The foundation encourages styles such as hip-hop, R&B, and soul to be studied and cultivated in higher learning institutions along with other celebrated genres such as classical, jazz, and rock.
Dilla Day 2011 will take place at Plum (108 17th Street N) in downtown Birmingham and serve as a fundraiser for the foundation. Doors open at 6PM with a screening of Timeless: A Suite for Ma Dukes; a performance of the music of James “J Dilla” Yancey performed by a 60 piece Orchestra composed and arranged by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson feat. special guests Bilal, Dwele, Posdnuos, Talib Kweli and more. Immediately following at 7PM, 5 DJs will play music that was produced and performed by J Dilla for the remainder of the night while Marika Johnson creates an illustration live.
Donations will be accepted and there will be information on site about the chronic inflammatory disease, Lupus
