Bing Ji Ling – Sunshine Love
Featuring member of the Dap Kings, Antibalas and Phenomenal Handclap Band (of which he is a member), Shadow to Shine brings the funk as you would rightfully expect. My favorite moments, however, are the lighter tunes, when Bing Ji Ling (Chinese for ice cream) showcases his amazing range (Hold Tight) and oozes smooth soul (Sunshine Love)

Here’s a joint that’s every bit as mysterious as the woman hidden behind the beautiful flower. Nothing is known about UBQTS or the producer Mikey Leu. There are no links to any social networks or websites, and even more enigmatic is his message to “Contact me if you want the cassette” and there’s no means to do so.

The end of one journey and the beginning of a next. SHEN07 complete’s his 6-part beat-tape series with an 8 track finale. Just in time for spring, and though it doesn’t quite feel like it yet his beats definitely don’t discriminate against the weather. So as usual, this young-blood continues to surprise us with his growth and flexibility with what he has. I’m sure it’s been a long road for SHEN, and I doubt his journey is nowhere near it’s end.
Paper Plane Project – Pacific Connection
There’s a new PPP in town, and they’re Australia’s Paper Plane Project! The duo met while diggin’ for records in Brazil and have created a really dope project. “Paper Plane Project’s sound is all about that old-school Sunday afternoon party in the park, bringing soulful beats and vibes back into the realm of hip-hop and beyond.” One of my favorites is the boogie flavored Don’t Hold Back which has me wanting to get my dance on right now!
Belle Boussole – Love In Outer Space (Sun Ra Cover)
Being from Alabama, and Birmingham specifically I am a huge Sun Ra fan. It doesn’t make me unbiased though, and when our friends Belle Boussole released their cover of Sun Ra’s classic jazz tune, Love In Outer Space I was a bit skeptical. The laid back, electro-jazz, trip hop cover is great and was created when the duo was requested to perform a Sun Ra tune at a literary event
Joy Orbison AKA Joy O – Wade In
Hotflush just released the 2 track EP, Wade In/Jels by DJ/producer and champion of dubstep, Joy Orbison now known as Joy O. Wade In sneaks up on you, as the keys don’t join the percussion until 2 minutes in. Once it does though, make sure you’re not in the way of the dancefloor because you might get knocked down from the floor rush!

Here’s your introduction to Michigan’s Chris Sims, a young emcee that believes his name will be on your tongue sooner than later. Big Picture was created to take you “on a small journey though ‘his’ thought process as a new artist.” The treat for me, though, is the laid back production by Shade Cobain which recalls early ATCQ. I need an instrumental to this! What do you think?
