Samm Henshaw – The Sound Experiment

D’angelo’s influence created many musical disciples in his time gone from the limelight, as they attempted to capture ”that lightning in the bottle” as far as soul music goes. Music fans like myself have also searched for it and it can be difficult to find, but not impossible. I have learned in my travels that sometimes you have to look overseas to find new talent and Great Britain just so happens to be a criminally overlooked hotbed of musical talent. This is how I found about Samm Henshaw, from an ex-girlfriend, an expatriate living in London who saw this burgeoning talent live.
She sent me a copy of his CD, Sound Experiment, and I was instantly hooked. The intro, “Temptation,” pulls you in like a drug induced haze. The tracks “Autonomy” and “Everything” show his range as not only a singer but also a musician. The track that really blew my mind is “Redemption,” as the track alone felt like you were going to church. “Better” is very much infectious and harkens back to his influences in so many ways, and you definitely hear some Curtis Mayfield love there.

The last track, “Only want to be with you,” leaves you with a feeling of nostalgia and heartache, as he reminds the listener of the many emotions of falling for someone, and even having to beg for their love. The only thing I wish was that the album was not an EP but an LP, however all in due time, right?. I ended up going to his soundcloud page, and found his cover for the One Direction song, “Best Song Ever,” which I can write a whole post for, on how soulful it is. Definitely a talent to keep your eyes and ears peeled for. Grab the EP HERE
