Phil Beaudreau – ETHER [Stream & Download]

Phil Beaudreau‘s name has never appeared between these HTML headers before and there is good reason for that. Because his former outfit, Boston Indie Rock group, Shaimus plays music in a genre that we don’t normally cover ’round these here parts.

But if there is one thing that 2013 taught us, it’s that the lines that once existed between genres are breaking, crashing, blending, fusing and Vulcan mind-melding, creating more space for artists to gain more exposure with different demographics. Two years ago, you wouldn’t have been able to convince me that I would listen to and actually like an EDM, Leftfield, Post-Dubstep track or anything even remotely close to it. Yet in the last 6 months, my Google Play Music account has become a home to copies of tracks from Kaytranada, FKA Twigs and Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Go figure. The world of music continues to be an ever evolving organism. So much so, that when I chanced upon Phil Beaudreau yesterday on a Soundcloud re-post and clicked play for his year old track,

I knew full well that I would be back to see when his full length would debut. It did so, a scant four hours ago and it’s completely living up to it’s namesake. Teaming up with producer Dawaun Parker of Aftermath fame was a stroke of genius at the very least, as the sonic backdrop he’s provided seems to envelope Beaudreau’s solid tenor in a misty haze that teeters on the edge of ElectroSoul but flirts with harmonies and bridges from yesteryear as well.

If we get more music of this kind in 2014, it could shape up to be another banner year. While we wait and see, cop this ten bill offering over at Phil’s iTunes page HERE.
