Murs – Have A Nice Life

I like Murs, but I’m not a Murs fan by far. Not like that, I’ve just never invested quality time into researching him because I was super late in my discovery of his music. I completely missed the formative period, as well as the Living Legend years and came on board during the 9th Wonder collaborations. I was expecting more of that vibe when I picked up Have A Nice Life and was confronted with something completely different.
I blame the first track on the album, the title track, for reinforcing my expectations. Spectacular soulful, yet sparse instrumentation while heavy on reflection & jewels, Have A Nice Life’s somber flow had me bobbing my head while soaking in what he was spitting. Unfortunately, It wasn’t until 9 tracks later that I found a buoy in this album’s expanse; Skatin Through the City, the only other track that spoke to me, not only because I used to skateboard in rough areas but also because the beat knocks. If NWA had a skateboarding video, this would be its soundtrack.
Have a Nice Life is eleven tracks total, 9 of which I can do without. I’ve deleted these from my iPhone so I can have a nice listen to Murs without the forgettable fodder.
