Rolling Stone recognized Marcus Machado’s as a Young Gun, a “notable guitarist of the next generation” so I must admit I had my notions of how his new EP, 29, would sound. What came across on this 5 track jewel was exactly what I did not expect to hear. The only track that’s completely rocked out is Code Black feat Sandra St. Victor, but the rest could easily be confused as D’angelo’s followup to Black Messiah. Soulful, funky, and edgy with a guitar-led groove Machado impresses from start to finish even throwing Hip Hop into the mix. DJ Spinna assists on New Thangz, and Reverse the Time begins with an intro perfect for an emcee’s voice to explode from.
