Taylor McFerrin’s Early Riser is everything you would expect from the son of the legendary Bobby McFerrin (who is featured on the album as well) and Brainfeeder signee. The Brainfeeder label itself evokes thoughts of new wave artists who are no strangers to organic synth filled glitch hop. This project is no different. Admittedly I haven’t become super familiar with McFerrin’s catalog, which is a bit more sparse in terms of official releases. However, if I didn’t know..now I know. I am sure Das EFX would agree when I say that this album is dope diggity dope! The features alone drew me in; Nai Palm from the Aussie collective, Hiatus Kaiyote, Thundercat, Emily King, and Bobby McFerrin amongst others. The style is Brainfeeder through and through. However, McFerrin puts his own unique spin on it with solid arrangements and old school flare adapted for modern listening. I enjoyed Early Riser from front to back and I will have my ear out for whatever this man drops next. I suggest y’all do the same.
