They say you can’t judge a book by its cover but I’m not so sure that applies to albums. One look at the cover for Sea Ahead and I knew I had to give it a listen. Spanish Double bassist Alfonso Calvo’s Sea Ahead has to be one of the most sublime listens I’ve had in a while. My entry into Jazz was formed around Gil Evans’ arrangements and Calvo’s septet’s performance has me reminiscing on my initial fascination with the genre. Tom Risco is featured on the album, adding wonderful vibes to the septet and his work on the title track has me absolutely spellbound. Listen and enjoy!
