Ta-Ku – Dowhatyoulove

Ta-Ku’s album, Dowhatyoulove is an instrumental gold mine. He lays R&B grooves against hard hitting drum beats which makes for an instant nod session throughout the album. When I first heard “Where” I instantly thought of J Dilla. The melodies and uses of soulful vocals and drums are reminiscent of why we love J Dilla – and why I love this album. One of my favorite tracks is “Someone Else.” Ta-Ku uses an altered sample of Donnie Hathaway and Roberta Flack’s “Where is the Love” against a smooth Hip Hop groove. It really gives an old song new life.
Ta-Ku doesn’t just stick to soul sessions either. There’s “Boom” with a funky beat that
sounds like a metal explosion and “Red Alert” starts off with a Shaft like beat and turns into a classic Hip Hop track, reminding me of The D.O.C’s “It’s Funky Enough” from the 90’s. Both songs break up the album and make it well rounded and easy listen. Compared to his other albums “Retwerk” and “Make it Last”, Dowhatyoulove is for the lover of good old 90’s Hip Hop tracks. If you like hard hitting beats infused with soul, you will love this
album.
