Onra – Fundamentals (Album Review)

Onra – Fundamentals (Album Review)

Can we be honest for a moment? Even though I consider myself to be pretty well versed in music, especially Hip Hop, I do miss some things and I’m not too conceited to admit that I take a few L’s when it comes to being first when certain music drops. As I mentioned to Rahdu, I was TOTALLY unaware of Parisian producer Onra before he put me on to this guy. After some researching and spending a few productive nights analyzing his latest project Fundamentals, I can honestly say that I’m now a fan. Aside with his stellar production, it’s clear that Onra has the knack for donning the A&R cap and piecing together the right artists with the right tracks. Nothing is lost on substance either. With features from industry mainstays such as Chuck Inglish (So Long), Black Milk, (That’s Me) and The Dopplegangaz (Anything)  juxtaposed with  legends like Daz Dillinger of DPG (We Ridn’)  fame and Chicago innovators Do or Die (Over &Over), Fundamentals shapes up to be a definite summer soundtrack to welcome in the season of highway cruising and barbequing. Onra offers a couple of instrumentals to vibe to as well. Cuts like Money and the super short, yet bass heavy interlude 95.5 serve as transitional tunes that move the record into his chosen direction.

Honestly, I would love to expound more on this project, but I feel as though I’d be doing a disservice to the gentleman by overanalyzing it. Not being familiar with his previous works, I really have nothing to compare this one to. That’s probably a good thing, because I’m able to offer up an honest, nonbiased opinion of Fundamentals and I will offer this. If Onra’s catalogue over the years is in any way similar or noteworthy as his current works, then I’ll be taking a dive into his collection to retrieve more gems, because Fundamentals has moved me to implant this brother on to my radar.

Good Job Onra, your new fan…
